Need some advice on an audition programme...
on: November 29, 2010, 04:18:23 PM
Hi there,
I'm curretly applying through UCAS to some Uni's to complete a BHons Degree in Music. I'm not applying to conservatories so the standard isn't quite as high. I'm after around 3 pieces which vary in style and character. I'm currently Grade 7 (Grade 8 by the time Uni's here next September) so the pieces can't be anything to bad (Liszt's La Campanella
) but still challenging-ish. I was maybe thinking a movement from a Mozart Sonata? And then either a Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody or Chopin Nocturne?
Thanks!

Why not Beethoven, Liszt & Ligeti?:
Beethoven: Piano sonata no. 8 Phatetique 1 mvt
Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsodie no. 10
Ligeti: Etude no. 6

One of the more challenging Mozart sonatas should do well, and probably better than Beethoven, which is usually more popular. Selections from K. 284, K. 310, K. 457, K. 533, or K. 576 to name a few should work. Chopin Nocturnes and Liszt HR's are great, but again I would recommend staying away from the more overplayed ones. You might want to explore some less common Romantic repertoire: from what I have played, I would recommend the first movement of the Mendelssohn fantasy, which isn't played too often.

It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.
A world, in short, totally unlike our own.
