ipad sheet music apps?
on: November 29, 2010, 06:27:48 PM
I'm now the proud owner of an ipad, thanks to the generosity of my inlaws.  What I'd like to do is use it to display sheet music, so that I can save a tree or two instead of printing everything off that I want to try.  I've already got a few pdf viewers, but they're not tailored to looking at music and I can't quite get them to display things in a very useable way.  anyway, anyone have some good suggestions?  the only thing I've found is a service that charges big money for each sheet you download, which I'm not going to do--might as well just print it out for free if I'm going to do that.

I'm sure an iPad can do it but you need a foot-control of some sort to make it turn the page for you. It'd be best turned sideways so you can see a whole system of music (or two, probably) at a decent size.

There is a foot controler for pdf file I heard about.

I was looking at this awhile ago.

I see they've made an iPad page turner.

I found these other ones just now.

Here's something in a trombone forum about iPads.

I was thinking having a larger-size computer monitor at the piano might work, although those are $100+.  Plus a foot pedal....  And considering it's electronic and could stop at any time... Paper still looks pretty cheap and solid.

The i-pad is a very impressive tool but I'm not so sure it could take the place of paper on the piano. For one how would you mark up a score? Other than the music and the piano, my pencil is indispensable.

I'm sure they'll make something if it's not already out there.

There is that eread booklet specifically for music.... I remember it was around $1,000 or something like that.  It allowed you to mark the music up.

It would be nice to have the music available right away and not have to hunt for it, esp when music "disappears" after a few years.  I also like to be able to enlarge music on a computer screen.  Making copies is a hassle (and illegal I think, unless you call your eyesight a disability).  But electronics aren't 100% reliable and paper is waaaay cheaper.

well, looks like there's no satisfying solutions.  I'm contemplating this app:  Noteloop PDF sheet music reader  https://www.noteloop.com/studios/pdf-sheet-music-reader/ but of course, I have a certain contempt for paying money for anything on the internet.  :)

has anyone tried it?

also, to clarify, I'm not trying to replace my use of paper sheet music.  in fact, I usually buy a bound copy of the sheets for a work that I'm actually studying.  but I like to dabble and try out pieces, and I was hoping to have an easier way of doing that.

I tried Etude on the iPad https://etudeapp.com/
It's an interesting app but it has some drawbacks so I'm not throwing out good old paper any time soon. First of all, their catalog is somewhat limited. Then, the automatic page-turning isn't always working correctly because for some songs it misses repeats. Furthermore, the auomatic page turning does not account for tempo changes (as far as I could tell).

It's a $4.99 app and it's too bad they don't have a free demo version because it may suite some needs but it's a waste of money when it does not suite yours.

On the other hand, saving PDFs to iBooks works pretty well almost effortless. Turning a page in iBooks by swiping across the screen is still a bit easier than turning a physical page so there is one advantage even for this simple solution
