Justin Bieber
on: December 03, 2010, 12:40:18 PM
As much as this guy's name manages to infect YouTube discussions, I feel like creating this thread out of sheer numbness: Why is he popular at all? What's wrong with people? Or is he just a musical fad worshiped by young girls? When I first watched and listened to his music video "Baby" which right now has a bit over 400,000,000 (!) views on YouTube, I couldn't help myself but wonder: Does music become more popular if it becomes more stupid? I thought Pop Music reached the zenith of its stupidity with Lady Gaga, but Justin Bieber really proved me wrong.

Also, it turns out Michael Habermann's daughter is a fan of Justin Bieber as well. Make of that what you will.  :P

So, what are your thoughts on Justin Bieber, his fans, his music, the future of Pop Music and the likelihood of even further dumbing down of society and/or contemporary mass culture?

I've never heard the guy sing, but it's been a couple of decades since I've had more than minimal exposure to pop music.  I know what he looks like, though, and on that basis I'd guess that he appeals primarily to a demographic of teenybopper girls.  How old is Habermann's daughter?

Personally, I think everything "becomes more popular if it becomes more stupid" (and vice versa!).  I say that with deliberately broad-stroked, tongue-in-cheek hyperbole, but that correlation is the very definition of mass appeal.  The masses aren't expected to be brilliant or sophisticated.  And, perversely, when a rarefied niche interest does cross over to broader popularity, it tends to lose its cachet for the cognoscenti.

It's easy to feel that we're well on our way to idiocracy, but I suspect that it's always been that way.  There's no accounting for taste, and even "elitists" are known to have guilty pleasures.

People liked Milli Vanilli...
People liked Hanson...
People liked Jackass...
People like Justin Bieber...

My justification for this pattern of events??? Some people are attracted to the absolute crap of the earth. It seems that some people are attracted to idiots, and that those idiots take advantage of these morons who will watch or listen to pretty much anything.

Considering the music industry has gone from hard-working people who took the time to write songs and lyrics in their basements or hotel rooms 40 years ago... to the menutia that exists today with sound enhancement, major corporations writing the songs for these morons and auto-tuning, lip-synching, and the fact that now the music industry doesn't seem to give a flying f*** about the music anymore, but trying to now use their looks and bodies to sell their 'music' (if it can be called that)... This is the reason I don't own a radio. It's all s***!

I'm still praying for a sniper somewhere in america to take care of this little beiber problem...    ;D

Since I don't have boy-crush on him, I don't hunt down every conceivable incident. I've chanced upon an interview or two and one fan interaction (with an adoring little six year old girl)--those are all I have on which to base an opinion. I'm sorry I don't have your vault of information.

I personally, don't like his music, and I have successfully avoided almost every televised interview. I have to say, cut him some slack he's what 16 or 17? That's supposedly some of the worst years. I don't think I would want anyone looking at every time I messed up and using that against me. Or taking something I would regret doing and people thinking it's great. Not saying he's a good musician or a good person, but just saying he deserves at least a little empathy.

I'm saying they're both just as bad but I like beiber better if I had to choose between both of them. I reckon Beiber baby has a better singing voice than black. Black, on the other hand, overuses  on autotune. Besides Rebecca black is ugly. At one point Friday had over 1.5 million dislikes on Youtube. I hate them both! The thing that I hate about them both is that they both are already recording music at a young age. Shouldn't they be at school instead? I mean really if they fade from the music industry eventually they would have to find some kind of job to do. and Beiber! already dating Gomez. I read in an article once but it was probably fibs that they were considering getting married.

Friday, Friday gotta get down on Friday......

Yeah - Sure... Bieber has a much better singing voice than Black - it seems so clear now...

Yeah... of course - Justin Beiber doesn't use auto tune at all...

I'm sorry...

This is WHY I do NOT listen to music on the radio these days. They wonder why people still listen to classical music? Probably because the music today is SH!T... and that classical music still has bloody substance.

Um...I understand that Lady Gaga has some pretty creepy, ugly, revealing, and yes weird costumes but, if your saying that because of the fact she is "weird" means that she's less of a performer is in my personal opinion outrageous. I personally think it's better that she's a little weird. It's a lot better than her being a copycat.

I went back and read, her Wikipedia article and it mentions that she had written her first piano ballad by age 13 but I don't think that says much considering we don't know if it was any good. Like pianoplayjl I do know she can play piano. I saw her play on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

No... It's the fact that these days, it's mainly the record companies who are writing these songs, and passing them on to whatever dickhead agrees to sing them while completely throwing their dignity and integrity out the window to make a cheap buck.

Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Bieber - they lip synch, they use auto tune... they're talentless. They're basically just a bunch of Karaoke singers.
