Liszt: Liebestraum 2 or Petrarch's Sonnet 104
on: December 03, 2010, 03:38:42 PM
Hello
I want to play one of those pieces.
Which one do you like more?
Which on do you think is harder?
Thanks

The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

Well, it's nice that you're not picking Liebestraum No. 3 for a change.
I would go with that one just to throw people for a loop, but I also encourage learning the first and third also, so you can play all three as a set. Just my 2 cents.
The Petrarch's Sonnet 104 is a great piece, though.

I have a series of volumes called
Thematic Guide to Piano Literature
by Marthe Morhange-Motchane that offers grade levels for numerous composers, including Liszt. For what it's worth, Sonetto 104 is ranked a couple of levels higher in difficulty than Liebestraum #2.
I wonder if Ms. Morhange-Motchane is related to Alkan.
