Malaguena - Who composed it?
on: July 31, 2004, 07:49:45 AM
hello, I am interested to know who composed "malaguena", a common spanish piece.  I dont mean the one by Albeniz, but I mean the one with the melody:

E G# B E G# B A C B A G F E

I play the guitar, and am interested in finding the sheetmusic for this great work, maybe even transcribe something for the piano.
Thanks,
donjuan

I think you're referring to the piece by Ernesto Lecuona. The one sort of immortalised by Liberace. It's a great sounding work, and I think there are one or two transcriptions for piano already, but if I have seen them (and my memory's pretty sketchy on this point), I think they were very simplified, so if you could make something a little more complex out of it, it'd make a great solo piano piece.

Lecuona did write some pretty good piano music, too. The Spanish Suite called 'Andalucia' has got a couple of great numbers in it.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'.

It pains me to say this, but these are quite ignorant remarks. The original piece is for piano and not guitar, like most Spanish pieces. If you look, most of Albeniz's pieces were first Piano then Guitar. It's usually changed to an easier key. This piece went from piano to orchestral and somewhere along the lines became guitar.. The last movement of the piano Suite Andalucia (and it's proper name is Suite Espagnole) by Lecuona IS Malaguena. It can grow to be VERY loud, but it's an awesome piece. Don't play it on the guitar. Play it on the piano, where the piece was originally meant to be played. It's not very difficult at all. I'd also recommend you play Cordoba, Andalucia, Gitanerias, and Guadalquivir from the same suite. Hell, play all of them. They are great pieces.

Darkwind is right.

Ernesto Lecuona (1896 – 1963) – who by the way was Cuban – deserves to be better known. His “Danzas Afro-Cubanas” (a set of six highly rhythmic pieces) and his “19th Century Cuban Dances” (a set of ten pieces) are also very good and easier than the Suite Andalucia.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

oh my god, this is so very confusing! Does any one know where to get the piano score of "Suite Espagnole" then?  I have never heard it on the piano- I only thought it existed for the guitar.

Better yet, does anyone have a recording of Suite Espagnole played on the piano?

It's not very hard to find. Try online at sheetmusicplus.com or something.
