Price for a new mason Hamlin bb?
on: January 01, 2011, 05:19:15 PM
I was on the track to buy a pre 1932 MH BB....but some posts I have seen on this site suggest that actual sales prices for new pianos are significantly lower than the msrp...Given the current economy. I was quoted 48,000 for a new bb about 4 months ago. Does anyone have a good idea about how much anew bb should actually be purchased for?? What would be a good price? Is 35000 too high? 28000??
Does anyone have a suggestion re HOW to buy a new piano...other than a standard route of using a local dealer?
Thank you.

Mcnaky,
Hi.
First of all, your topic says "new" Mason Hamlin, but you are on track you purchase a pre 1932 piano.
The $48,000 you were quoted, is that for a new factory fresh piano or a 1932?
Also, i really don't know what the MSRP on a new piano is. Easy enough to find out later though. I work in NYC and I could stop at Faust Harrison.
There is no MSRP on an old piano. That is the suggested retail price on new.
It is also impossible to give a fair price on a piano via the internet for an 80 year old piano without seeing, playing and condition analysis of it.
What IS possible though, is to give a rough ballpark figure on a rebuilt BB. There are variables though, one major one being of what style the cabinet is. Fancy furniture adds a LOT to the cost as opposed to a traditional style.
For a BB traditional that has been TOTALLY restored, complete new action, preferably Renner parts IMHO, hammers, shanks, wippens, new keytops or polished original ivories, refinished pedals and rebuilt lyre and trapwork, new strings, pinblock, soundboard at least shimmed or replaced, refinished cabinet, virtually a new piano, you would be looking to spend appx. 35K. give or take a few grand.
Anything less that that, would mean restored some years ago. If it was 10 years ago, I would easily know 10K off of that.
Search Country Pianos or Lindeblad Pianos online. They have a few and they are excellent rebuilders. There are many more rebuilders here in NY. Faust Harrison, they sell MH's new and also do a supreme rebuild. From them, you may be looking in the 40's. Probably the best rebuild of MH's I have seen, but how much is enough. All 3 of these place are great.
Best regards.

Sorry for the confusion...I am looking at pre 1932 masons...but expanded my search to consider a new piano too. So, I am wondering if anyone has experience with how much discounting there is in new mason bb pianos.
I appreciate the comment re rebuilt pianos...I have seen the Lindeblad rebuilt pianos. What do you know of their reputation and quality? Just heresay, or more than that? I was thinking of paying them a visit.
Thank you

Lindeblad has been restoring pianos for a long time and perform total rebuilds. You can be confident of having it done right. There are a few others around. Shop around. The names don't roll right off the tongue, but there is a really good rebuilder in Yonkers, NY too. I really like the way Faust Harrison reguilds the plate, like a powdercoating and better prepped instead of a gold paint.
