I'm a beginner looking to upgrade from a lousy keyboard that I purchased at a garage sale...I'm looking for the best value in $200-300 range.

Thanks in advance!

There are plenty of decent digital pianos in that range. I had a feeling this place was a little too piano-snobbish for my question. Thanks anyways.

For a decent digital piano you'll have to pay at least 500$ (and very likely more). Second hand digital pianos usually have a big flaw so thats not really an option.

But if you already know of good digital piano's in the 200-300 price range, why are you asking here? Just to call us snobbish?

Well I had had the Yamaha NP-30 in mind (~$270) but since having tested it hands on, it's not as realistic as I had hoped. But I did try the Casio PX-130 ($450 on Amazon, no tax or shipping costs in most states) and I loved it, it's the one for me.

Sorry to use the word snobbish in regards to the site as a whole. That was wrong. I guess I just got a bad first impression...Mr. silverwoodpianos' post wasn't very friendly or understanding of a beginner looking for a decent entry level instrument.

Thanks for your thoughtful response.

No problem ;)

A better approach in buying a piano is trying out alot of them, and by that making up your mind what you demand from one. Because there is not much point in setting a price range for a type of piano you dont want ;)

Yes, those soft touch Yamahas have a very spongy feel to them.  You get a much more realistic feel if you can hold out for a Yamaha P95 or the PX-130 around $500.  I haven't tried anything in the $300 range that had a good piano style action.  Of course there are other things to consider besides the action, but if you are a piano student the action has to be considered.

I know someone who got that 450$ Casio for 300$ (brand new in the box), it just took some asking around local music stores.  Try it.  Amazon is not always the cheapest option, may Jeff Bezos not strike me down for saying so.   Good luck, s.

Thanks guys, I placed my order for the Casio PX-130 earlier tonight after long deliberation between it and the Yamaha P-95. I guess Casio has really stepped their game up with the Privia Series, because from what I read the debate seems simply a matter of preference. And the Casio was a $100 cheaper plus it ships with the power supply so ~$125 cheaper.

Yeah, you're right. It was hard for me to justify spending $270 for the Yamaha NP-30, when for only $170-190 more you can jump into a light-years difference in feel (plus an 88-key instrument, I believe the NP-30 is only 76).

Check out this site for ideas. It's where I do most of my shopping. My preference would be a Yamaha PSR for that price range.....
