a stage-pianist is a gambler
on: February 01, 2011, 07:00:50 PM
a psychology and sociology scholar  has told me  that all artists are gamblers because the technical skill and originality don't guarantee that people like your creations or interpretations and also if they do  their opinion can change; so trying to get a livelihood as a concertist , painter,ecc..is the same as playing roulette in a casino: the risk is starvation. You need to reserve a second job. It's an old stuff ,but the gambler-idea....

Riiight... Cause pianists just randomly pick an interpretation, and bet all our money into it.

Even then its very relative, you will always have people who like you, and always people who doesnt, this server for everything in life. You could be a Harvard graduate and there will be people who doesnt like your job.

So you can make a living out of anything you have talent for, thats just my 2 cents

Roulette is a bad example at the very least.  It is a game of pure luck.  There are professional gamblers but no professional roulette players (unless they are running some incredibly elaborate scam).  I actually saw online someone posting a "foolproof" way to get rich at the roulette wheel.  The short version of the plan is to smart small and increase the wager exponentially each time you lose so that eventually you will win and recover your losses with a tidy profit.  It kind of cracks me up because obviously a lot of thought went into this master plan, but it is destined to end in disaster.  The math is simple and the house always wins in the long run.

Well, sorry for the tangent.  To be a successful artist may take some lucky breaks, but for sure it takes a lot of hard work and talent.  Being a career musician or artist is a very competitive field, because a lot of people would like to do these things and we only "need" so many artists.  But to study art or music is a very rewarding thing in its own right, and if you can make a career off it even better!
