Senior Citizen, Beginner Student, First Questions, Learning Note Names/Positions
on: February 05, 2011, 07:08:27 PM
I am using Rocket Piano as a start to see if my arthritic hands can take the use. I am all thumbs at this point. I love to do the repetitive exercises. Will I eventually learn the note names, the note names on the clefs, and the associated position of the note on the keyboard just by repetition on the keyboard only?
Is there a good free beginner book I can download with graduated exercises?

Yes, with repetition you will eventually learn the note names, and more important, recognize which note on the staff means which key on the piano. There are several note recognition drills online that are fun to play and can help with this.
The usual recommendation is to get a teacher. Probably the best idea, however, I am self taught and I used a children's piano method primer (Bastien) to get started, and then got an adult method book level 1 (Alfred) to work out of. There are many out there - the most popular are probably by Alfred, Piano Adventures, Bastien, or Thompson. Sheetmusicplus.com will let you look at a page or two of each to see what you might like to try. Good luck and enjoy your new adventure.
