I Love John McCabe

No I am not drunk, I have just listened to the Piano Concerto No.1 and then had to listen to it again to make sure I was not going mad.

What a wonderful composition. Has drama and suspense written all over it. The opening Largo is like waking from a deep and slightly disturbing sleep then the Vivo takes you back into back into a devilish semi concious world of Goblins and Demons.

What a stupendous work. I hear the 2nd PC is even better.

I'm pleased to hear this! When I met and talked to John McCabe briefly at the Presteigne Festival in Wales in 2009 he seemed to be about to retire from piano playing, but I hope very much that this doesn't happen; his rôle in the (re)habilitation of Haydn cannot be overestimated. Check out his symphonies and his Mary, Queen of Scots as and when time permits you to do so.

Best,

Alistair
