Stupid Threads
on: August 06, 2004, 10:30:33 AM
While there is a lot of good information and discussion here that makes this forum worthwhile, I've noticed there are also a lot of extremely Stupid Threads.  Examples of this are the "there are no good teachers" thread.  There's also the "Vladimir Horowitz is lifeless!" thread or the "I have been playing piano for 3 days, am I ready to play Rach 3?" thread.

When I see these topics, I normally say to myself "This is a magnet for morons" and assume no one will dignify it with a response.  Yet I check pf later only to find that not only does it get responses, but it gets a whole plethora of them!  Topics like these always end up getting replies numbering in the hundreds, while interesting and well-thought-out posts are lucky to get 10.

So, why does this occur?  What do you think we should do about this problem?

Personally, I think all people who create or reply to a Stupid Thread should be administered a swift kick in the nuts*.  I believe this is the solution we're looking for.

*Note: Women and men who do not have nuts will be punished in some other way.

What problem? That people are posting on a forum! :o

Stupidity is a little like beauty - it's in the eye of the beholder.  If you think something is stupid and not worthy of posting, then don't.  What other people find interesting may be stupid to you, but not to them.... or they may think it's stupid too and THAT's why they  post.  It seems the controversial threads are the more popular because they're more entertaining (for some people).

Speaking of problems and stupidity and entertaining, where or where has lalla, I mean kulahola gone?  I miss her.  Hope she returns soon....

Thank you.
I am here indeed, following the developments of the conversations. I dont know whether I should return actively or not, because Bernadette is being too cumbersome on this forum.

Let's not be quick to tell someone they shouldn't return to the forum.  I find the interactions between kulahola and Bernhard to be rather amusing.  Also, kulahola sometimes has things worth contributing.

Indeed.  My original post here was facetious (obviously) and I do not feel that Stupid Threads should be deleted, or that people who make them should be punished or anything like that.  I would never argue in favor of such censorship in a community like this.

What I'm talking about are not threads that merely seem stupid to me, but threads which are so superficial or silly in their views that they seem to beg for a response.  This includes threads where the poster's sole intent is to get a rise out of people (See the "There are no good teachers" and "Why study Liszt when you can study Chopin" threads).  Even these threads are not worthless, because they are often entertaining, and include discussion within the first round of posts.

But after the first round of discussion ends, the original poster will often shift the focus to try to see if he can get even more a rise out of people than before.  And being good forum contributors, people take the bait.  They post a whole slew of impassioned responses.  They put their mouths before their minds.

And all that results is a flame war.

What interactions?  Bernhard has decided not to respond to Kulahola's posts anymore :(  and I think that's a great loss to our community.  :'( :'( :'(

I posted a lot in the JS Bach there are no good teachers thread.
I don't have to rationalize my posting there or on any other thread  (if you don't like it, you can ignore it or stuff it) but I will. When someone posts misinformation, I will respond to that, especially when I observe that some posters read the misinformation, and then post "yeah I agree."  Misinformation and bad advice need to be exposed for what they are.

i have to agree with Saturn.  I hate it when smart arse idiots post conceited, attention grabbing bits of self indulgent propoganda.  Especially against Horowitz.  And especially when they try to be clever.

If you want to write a stupid post then do it in the anything but piano forum, and if you want to keep away from them, don't got to that forum
