Help for repetoire!
on: August 06, 2004, 11:45:50 PM
Hi - Im a highschool student who have played for 9years now. But only seriously for 3-4 years.

So far I've managed to tackle these pieces:

Andante & Rondo Capricciosso - Mendehlsson
Liebestraum nr.3 - Liszt
Hungarian Rhapsody nr 2 (only "Friska" though)
Wedding at Trollhauge - Grieg
Clair de lune,  Arabesque nr 1 and Prelude pour le Piano - Debussy
Etude nr 3 opus 10, "Raindrop prelude" and a couple of nocturnes aswell - Chopin
Prelude nr.1 - Gershwin
Arabesque, Aufswung, Falbe, whole Kinderscenen, 3rd/4rd movement of Fantasie Opus 17 - Schumann

And the some other smaller pieces, several movements from a couple of Beethoven Sonatas.

Im not trying to show-off my repetoire since there's really nothing to be very proud of anyways, but was hoping some of you could suggest some pieces to play. I would really like to get going with a whole sonata - just doesn't know which one yet, and from the couple I have played by Beethoven I really didn't like them that much. Has Debussy written any Sonatas?

Well thanks for the help, Logar1!

Why don't you finish up the hungarian rhapsody and the fantasie?

Don't you think it would be too difficult?

Well...that's for you and your technique to decide. But I wouldn't consider them part of your repertoire if there not complete.

Debussy did not write any sonatas (although he wrote some suites in several movements, e.g. “Pour le Piano”; “Suite Bergamasque”, “Children’s corner”, and some pieces in sonata form, e.g. “L’isle Joyeuese” and “Dance of Puck”)

For some sonata suggestions have a look here:

For suggestions of general repertory within the difficulty level you want have a look here:

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

I'm from Denmark, never think I've heard of them.

Thanks

Well, your repertoire seems a bit short of twentieth century and baroque music.  Maybe you should try to learn a few Bach Prelude & Fugues, or a French Suite.  Also, you might enjoy learning a Scarlatti Sonata.

As for twentieth century, you could play some Prokofiev, Bartok, Scriabin, Ravel, or Rachmaninoff if you are more traditionally inclined.  If you're more adventurous, try something a bit later like Cage, Ligeti, Sessions, etc.  If you want, I can suggest specific pieces from these composers that are worthwhile.

Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.  The grade system this instititon utilizes is an arbitrary rating scale from 1 to 8 with 8 being the highest graded scale.  This does not mean that repetory that this institution has rated 8 is the most difficult of the repetory available, just that their scale system stops at 8.

And if you go to their website, www.abrsm.org, they are  the self-proclaimed "world's leading music exam board".   ::)
