Is this wise?
on: February 24, 2011, 10:17:23 PM
Hello everyone.
I can spend up to 4-5 hours practising a day. I just wondered what the best way to spend my time practising would be?
At the moment im learning 4 pieces at once. Is this wise?
I spend time on scales and arpeggios- around 30 minutes at the most. Is this wise?
My final question is about sight reading, im not very good it at it quite frankly. To improve do i just choose a few random pieces a day to attempt to sight read or are there things i should be doing to help me improve?

Well, it depends on the pieces you are learning, overall I would say 4 pieces at once seems fine, as long as you are able to practice theory and technique as well. Something I find helpful when sightreading, or even listening to a piece is to look at a copy of the sheet music and try to follow along. Then, attempt the piece for yourself. This has helped me! Also, take a few measures of the right hand, get that down, and then the measures of the left hand. It really moves you along!

All the best,
Natalie

thanks, in fact i have just tried this out. The piece was morning by grieg, not very difficult i know but i just happened to find it in one of my books. I have heard the piece but never knew what it was called. When i was singing it while looking at the music i realised wha it was and can now play most of it lol. As i said though it isnt very difficult. I might try something harder.
