I see there's a second hand copy on Amazon for £30 - an improvement on £200 ...

Gat's book has some good advice in it. Two drawbacks: 1) The book was published before videos, so many, many pages are dedicated to pictures of hands on the keyboard and that are not of much value in my opinion; and 2) you'll need to skip the chapters dedicated to anatomy and physiology, as many professors of anatomy over the years have enjoyed many laughs over Gat's explanations. Otherwise, Gat's insights into technique, practicing and musicianship are very good. Gat was a piano student of Bartok and became a pedagogue himself. I recall too that he used to serve on juries of important competitions in his time. He died in 1967 at 54.

I got mine last month on ebay. Really pleased to add it to my library - I'm so glad he was a fan of Matthay. I also bought his CD of harpsichord (Goldberg Variations) and clavichord music (CPE Bach).
