I play it and I dont use it, also I dont feel the need to it.

I also heard here in the forum that you dont use pedal when playing mozart, at least most of his pieces are not made to use the pedal

I wouldn't dream of playing most Mozart without pedal, but it's how you use it that matters. For that sort of repertoire I find myself changing the pedal very frequently, often almost fluttering it. Or sometimes I'll hold it for just the first eighth-note in each bar, or something like that.
Instrumentalists are all wannabe singers. Discuss.

thank you everyone for the replies... i have never used pedal to play this piece but i notice that in youtube, there are pianists who use pedal and the piece sounds really nice, as if the sounds are sparkling, which is just right for Mozart. I asked this question because i've read somewhere that we shouldn't use pedal for Mozart's pieces. And so i got confused. That's why i asked this question in this forum. Many thanks to all once again :)

Hi : This doesnt really have a simple answer. But never fear Becky is here so Ill try and answer it anyway.  ;D Use of the pedal depends on a lot of things.  First is if your in the learning stage and playing at a tempo slower than you will when the Sonata is finished , you wont get a true read on using the pedal at the slower speed. Second - good pedaling , really good pedaling depends on just how deep into the piece you want to go.  It depends on how good you are at finger substitutions. I know all of this can sound wacked, but try this. Once your close to the tempo that you will use after you have learned the Sonata, record the piece without any pedal. Then take the music and read it while you listen to the recording.  That will go along way to telling you where to use the pedal. Hope that helps a little.

Cheers, Becky

It depends on how you want it to sound. Personally, I prefer this Mozart Sonata to have a crisp, clean sound and therefore don't use the pedal except in a few places (very briefly) where my finger pedaling and legato fail me. I can't imagine using the pedal very much with so many scales at such a fast tempo. However, if you heard a recording in which the pianist used the pedal and you liked the way it sounded, then try it yourself and see what you think.

That's just a cliché which comes from people who have no idea about Mozart. Of course it's true, Mozart's pianos didn't have a pedal. But they had a knee lever with the same function (lifting the dampers) and the application of this "machine you use with your knee" (as he said) was just self-explanatory for him.
