Treemonisha
on: March 01, 2011, 06:32:55 AM
It seems amazing to me that a fully professional, high quality movie does not exist of the monumental 1977, Houston version of this beautiful work. I have loved this opera since I first accidentally heard it come over the radio on our concert programme over thirty years ago.
Of course, I have both CD and vinyl recordings of it but a month or so ago I thought I would like to see it. I ended up having to buy a DVD from one of those sites which sell amateur, or inferior quality versions of operas which cannot be obtained anywhere else. Thank goodness for these sites, they do enthusiasts a wonderful service.
But Treemonisha 1977, with Carmen Balthrop and company, was a unique resurrection of a work by one of America's greatest musical sons. Any number of tripey old Hollywood movies have been diligently remastered onto innumerable DVDs with the utmost care.
What is going on here ?

Speaking of Hollywood,
I saw 'The King's Speech' recently and loved the piano score for it. I want to get a hold of the sheet music for my collection. I would enjoy playing it as much as 'Treemonisha'....
