Prokofiev Sonata 7 fingerings
on: March 06, 2011, 10:06:06 PM
What fingerings do you use in the 1st movement for the place somewhere in the middle section, a scale going up, where is written 'con brio'. (Boosey&Hawkes editions, page 62 at the bottom of the page.
It should be clear for everyone who played it.
It is a problem for me, and a mental problem as well. Everytime I arrive in tempo at this place, i *** up that passage cause something 'blocks' inside me.
Help? Advice? Someone

Is that roughly 10th page just before FF marcato?

If it is, try to avoid using thumb on the black keys.
Try #3123 1234 12 123 123 12 then you'll have #3 and 5 for E and G at the end.  Also you'll see there is a kind of pattern going on in this pasage.

Thanks man!
It needs to get into my fingers, but I've the impression it's more comfortable already. The beginning was more or less the same, but your end is better I believe, I used fifth finger on a#
Although, it feels more logic to me to end E en G on 1,5.
But this passage worked good for you? ;)

If there are other suggestions or advice, I'm glad to hear them.

OK, I changed my mind; to end on 3,5 is indeed a good idea, to keep the 123 123 123 pattern.
Great.

AND, may I ask what you use in the left hand this passage?
I think a part of the problem is there as well.

The E octave can be staccato.  Start from G#, 5321 321 321 then use #2 & 5 for A# and E.  You can even connect B to A# and E with this fingering.

Are you studying this sonata by yourself?

Thanks! I'll give it a try.
No, I'm playing this sonata for a while already, I played it several times in concert, but this place always went wrong. for 50% due to bad fingerings I think.

i started this recently and have been messing with this fingering for the RH (starting on a#):

1234 1234 12345 12345

then just whack GE with 53
it's the sort of fingering i imagine prokofiev would have used 8)

in my opinion anything is better than 121 for such a fast scale
