Whatcha workin' on??
on: August 09, 2004, 10:18:24 PM
What's everybody working on nowadays?

I myself....

Bach--Italian concerto 1, fuge in C

Chopin- Heroic polonaise, Revolutionary

Beethoven-Waldstein Sonata

among other things

I would like to do some more scarlatti and start some haydn. Maybe do more Chopin etudes too.

Hello, :)

Sadly I'm currently working on Mozart's Turkisk March.

Don't get me wrong but I do like Turkish March. I had started on this piece a long time ago but decided to work on something a lot more challenging. I learned the whole piece except for the second page, somewhere around measure 30-50.

I would have been working on the "Revolutionary Etude", but I have a problem with my keyboard. :((Long story).

What's sad about Turkish March?

I'm (long term) working on Totentanz.

And others, with less priority:

Moonlight 3rd
Sibelius' March of the Finnish Jaeger Battalion piano transcrpt.
Sibelius' Finlandia piano transcription
12th Hungarian Rhapsody

Im actually in a kind of limbo. Im in a different city than my teacher, so Im not taking lessons right now and Im starting my graduate in september, but I havent recieved the list of repertoire Im supposed to be playing.... soooo, Im just keeping older pieces Ive played in shape for some recitals (got to get money to help pay for my wife's air fare) and working on some new Scarlatti sonatas....

so, what Im playing right now:

Shostakovich concerto n.1 (the one with the trumpet :) )
Sonata op. 90 Beethoven
Grieg 6 lyric pieces op.  68
7 different Scarlatti sonatas
Chopin Berceuse
Lachenman Ein Kinderspielen
Debussy Etude 5
Rachmaninoff etudes 4 and 5 from op. 33

and some chamber music...
For a good laugh, check out my posts in the audition room, and tell me exactly how terrible they are :)

These days i just practice all day, i dont have a job (I realize its a blessing to not have a job when not in school and be fine), so what I've been working on is

bach toccata in d minor fantasie and fugue (pretty cool)

mozart k 284 and k330(best mozart 2nd mvt ever), no beethoven presently

chopin
-op10 n.2,  (a very helpful etude), n.4
- polonaise f#minor op.44

Liszt
-Reminsces of Robert le Diable (Valse Infernale)  (anybody know any good recordings of the opera?)
-transcendental no. 8 wild jagd (thought about feux follets then heard Mei Ting recording and decided to stop thinking about it)

Rachmaninoff

c# minor prelude (Why not i've never learned it and it is bad ass)

3rd piano concerto (overrated, its only hard because theres a million notes in each bar......and its also hard, but a winner nonetheless! although I wish I had chosen no. 2 its so much more powerful)

and of course a little Petrouchka from my boy Stravinsky which in my opion is technically (as opposed to muscially, although certain people would say technicality involves your musicality but thats not what this topic is about) much harder than Rach 3.

And a composition im writing and etude called "The Hummingbird had too much Nectar". its pretty stupid.

Anyway, happy practicing everybody, and remember stop practicing and go do something else (unmusical)  if your mind is wandering.

Rautavaara Sonata no. 2
Sessions Sonata no. 2
Ligeti's Desordre, Autumn in Warsaw, and Der Zauberlehrling
Violette Sonata 6
Chopin op. 25 #12
Prokofiev Sonata #7
Ravel's Ondine and Le Gibet
Beethoven's op. 111

I've copied this list from my other post, because it hasn't changed much in the past couple of days.  Some of these pieces are brand new to me, others I'm still tangling with from a while back, lol.

I'm working on Ballades 1 & 4 of Chopin and some easier wedding music (Canon in D, Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring) - easy stuff, but I need it because I will be playing in one.

I'm new here, is there a place to post up recordings and have them evaluated?.. (i.e= Audition Room)

No, there's not really an audition room.  If you want to post something, though, just make a thread somewhere under "performance" or "students' corner"

I disagree strongly - figuring out the technique for the fast notes is less than half of the difficulty. Maybe less. But the fast passages are very difficult by themselves, true. I spend more time working on tone and voicing, in the first movement  - it's not trivial.

I'm working on (for a while) now:

Bach, b-flat minor P&F from WTC I
Beethoven, Les Adeiux sonata (81a)
Rachmaninoff, second sonata, 1st mov.
                      third concerto, 1st mov.

and I'm starting Beethoven op. 111 sonata.

I'm getting ready for college, and I'm working on:

Scarlatti: D minor sonata K517
Beethoven: Sonata op7
Liszt: La campenella etude(I can hear the sighs)
Ravel: Sonatine, Jeau deux

and Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto.

These pieces are tough, but I think that their musical difficulties outweigh thier technical difficulties.

And I agree that Petrouchka is has massive technical difficulties, just look at the left hand tremelo in the third movement!

to answer thierry13 i've played since a very young age, 4, and im almost 20 now.  However, my composition is very "modest" and as I stated eearlier kind of dumb. its an etude for trills and tremolos of various intervals, but its also in a mode where, regardless of key or octave variation, every other note is raised.(It doesn't work in certain keys, so i just avoid those keys). Uhm in the end it just sounds.....interesteing.
But when its done i guess i could post a pdf and midi. My composing is still extremely weak.

Prokofiev: Suggestion Diablique(Actually translated more like big happenings, but I guess Prokofiev thought it sounded cooler)

Chopin: Scherzo 1

Bach: WTC 1 C# Major

Liszt: Concerto 1(trying to learn everything by november for a competition! Ahhh!)

Once I finish the Prokofiev and Chopin Im going to finish Beethoven's Tempest

And also maybe Alkan's Toccatina in D minor I think. A great showoff piece.

I don't play as much as I used to, so I'm learning kinda slow.  Anyway, I started this piece awhile ago, but I put i off for awhile too.  And what's with all the pieces that you guys play?  It's crazy!  I mean, I have trouble just focusing on one piece and people here are practicing like... five or six pieces!  You guys must be really dedicated.
