crazy time signatures
on: August 09, 2004, 10:44:49 PM
I'm just curious, but have you ever found any techniques for dealing with sections of rythmical challenge-that also include odd time signatures?  For example, I was sight reading through a piece today, the time signature shifts from:

4/2
3/2
3/8
4/4
1/8
4/5 over 4
18/8
19.5 over 8
and 70. 5 over 8

It's well nigh impossible to keep track of everything, especially considering there are 5X6 and 7X10 rythms spread over three staves to keep track of.  How the heck am I supposed to play this?  Any tricks for dealing with rythmical problems will be most appreciated, lol.

Alot of Coplands works involve alot of counting skills ...

Some piano Duo's come to mind like his famous Hoe Down... and Danzas Cubano.... I hate these pieces because of the time signature.. (that changes pretty much EVERY measure of the piece)

Bartok usually has something like 5+3 over 8, etc. But, it never really matters to me. I usually listen to a recording to get an idea of what it sounds like. I rely more on the actual rythm of the piece than the time signatures, although sometimes pieces need a careful analysis of one. Do you have the piece in digital format? I'm curious to see it myself...

I'm afraid it's not in a digital format-I'm not aware of any pdf's.  I could try to scan a page onto my computer, but I doubt it would show well.
