Steinway OX
on: March 20, 2011, 05:31:19 PM
Hello.
This si my first post in the forum. I have lurking for a while and now I need some help.
I have been offered and Steinway Model OX. I can find only Model O but no OX.
I have searched the Internet and I only found one on a restorer.
I would be very grateful if you could let me know what is the X for.
In another forum I got a reply that this is an extended model for a player but for what I have seen the model for teh palyer is coded OR.
I would be very garteful if you could leet me know any information that coudl help me to make up my mind.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Best wishes
Antonio

Welcome Antonio,
I wish I could help but I can't. Here's the website of someone who might be able to...

I think the X was a player piano, which was really a stretched model O if I recall correctly. Really it might depend upon whether or not this is a Hamburg or a NY model; could be a stretched M too.
The serial number might help you with NY but unfortunately for Hamburg the records are sketchy if there are any at all previous to 1945.
I know that some of the old players were sent back to the factory for restorative updating at the end of the player era which was shortly after Marconi invented the radio.
Best thing to do is have a local technician of your choice do an appraisal and some research for you. Preferably one that does restorative work and is familiar with Steinway from both locations.
That way you will have a report on present condition and local market value on what you may purchase there.

If you think it's is expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.
