Decision between two music schools NEC and MSM
on: April 04, 2011, 04:52:50 AM
Hello,

I am a new member desperately in need of some unbiased advice. I am currently graduating from New England Conservatory as an undergrad in pno performance and am deciding if I should stay at NEC or go to Manhattan School of Music for grad school.

I would very much appreciate some advice based on these factors:

Pros of NEC: I have made many close connections with amazing students and faculty (mostly in the string department) because of my love for chamber music and collaboration. It would be likely that I can find gigging and job opportunities because I am so familiar with the area and have built up a reputation

Cons of NEC: I would be staying in one city for 6 years, not to mention that I am from the area...Boston is not a huge city and I am afraid that I would be choosing safety by staying here

MSM: The school is in New York, an exciting and challenging place. I would love to build some sort of reputation in a new place, especially in New York. I want to have new experiences and try to gain strength as an individual and a musician. Also, the teacher that I would be studying there seems very nice and intelligent--I could learn a lot from him.

Cons of MSM: New York is one of the most competitive cities for music--I'm afraid that I will not be able to hold up against the fast-paced, competitive environment. It would be a waste to go away from my connections and opportunities in Boston and end up not being able to make a reputation for myself. Plus cost of living seems to be higher.

Overview: I guess I'm deciding between a risk and a safety. Any help is appreciated!!

I understand your dilemma and can't give you any direct advice (only sympathy). Nice to have a choice, though. The only thing I know about MSM is that someone I know went to MSM for grad studies and now has quite a good, international career as an accompanist/vocal coach.  Most of that network was created at the MSM, and although competitive, such a place can also open doors. Best of luck!  :)
