I quit it recently. I really could never stand it, and one day I read the most disgusting things on the Wall I decided I had no choice. It was making me feel angry and upset. Does anyone else manage without it? I know a few young people who don't use it. But not many musicians.

Manage?  I never saw the point so I didn't.  I'm fine without it.

you don't "need" it, you want it :) facebook is addictive just like online gaming.

In fact, even forums like these are addicting, they did some medical research and showed that people have this obsessive addicting to constantly check if there's anything new, any new replies in a topic, any new status from friends, etc, and when there is, some chemical goes off in the brain.

One of the only reasons I use facebook is for homework help, or when I'm confused about due dates, school trips, ... etc :) My grade has a group on there, and people are constantly posting questions, answers, worksheets, test reviews, spam.... ;D
Without facebook, I'd be at a huge disadvantage.

Oh I also use it sometimes  to talk to my friends if they don't get my emails/ texts/ etc. Or to get photos after a special event.

Otherwise, I find facebook kind of boring... and stalkerish. :| I spend less than one hour on it per week.

But that medical study is interesting...

PS: to answer your question, I have a friend who doesn't use facebook. She just uses my other friend's account. ;D

I find it useful for keeping in touch with people I've met casually. If you know their name, you can usually find their contact details and send them the odd FB message. I probably spend barely 5 mins a day on FB and find it a little bit of harmless fun. One or two of my friends post amusing or interesting things with regularity, and occasionally a request for help which someone can usually answer.

Some degree courses require it, or something similar, like a web presence as part of project work. Awareness of digital media, etc. If you google a piano restorer, or the name of a favorite pianist, they probably have an online presence, and facebook or twitter is an easy way to start, as search engines index them frequently.

In answer to ongaku_oniko, I would say some people may genuinely "need" it rather like they genuinely may need a digital piano or prescription drugs.

I practically never use it anymore. It's gotten to be so annoying with all the apps and the news feed, and I really get annoyed at how difficult it is to find the information on someone's profile. I still have an account because friends use it as a way to organize events sometimes or send messages, but since I get notifications in my email inbox, there's no point in my ever "checking" Facebook. Once in a while I get caught up looking at pictures of people I don't know or reading through my news feed, and it's a tremendous time waster!

I gave it up for Lent, but I actually use it for very useful things, so I will be back on when Easter comes by.

I have never used it, I will never use it.

i deactivated it which kind of threw all my friends off because im 20 and they are all under the impression that it is absolutely necessary in life to have right now... i dunno, i just got fed up with seeing everyone's lives but my own.  plus we dont really care if you just ate a banana that was the most amazing banana ever.  its not status worthy and it doesnt matter at ALL. ::)

i figure if my friends really want to find out how my life's going, they'll call or email.  and so far i've found out who some of my true friends are because of that.

I have one face. I have lots of books. If and when I want to stuff the former into one of the latter, I can at least do so without having first to join something other than my brain to my eyes...

What's the advantage?  You just know what everyone else is doing and what they're preferences are?  To be in much closer contact?

You can be in closer contact with more people, which is particularly tempting if people you want to stay in touch with have scattered around the country or the world. It is unfortunate that people scatter so easily now-a-days, but I think the closeness Facebook provides is a bit of a sham. You're updated on many little details--all of which are selected for presentation by each person--but you don't get any of the important little details that you get from interacting personally with someone. You get a lot more out of spending an evening with a close friend than you would get out of reading a year of his Facebook posts.

I like your answer! I read a comment from a friend of a friend which was describing his masturbating! After that I said to hell with it and furiously deleted my account.

I changed Russda_man because I hated that name. The trouble is when you want to be at international level, and so many people are on it, you feel like you are going to lose out on everything and fail. I don't like this hold it has over people.

This thread is building an online social network of non-Facebook users. How about that!

What do you use instead? Why can't we just use piano street and email? Isn't that enough?
