Young Artist Guild  (YAG) DIFFICULT TO GET IN
on: August 12, 2004, 09:46:06 PM
I would like to hear from anyone that needs suggestions or have questions about the YAG because i am in the one of California's branch. It's not that hard to get one, just the pieces need to be chosen with excessive care.

Hey lisztman, I think we talked earlier, but here's my repetiore that I'll be trying out with in march(I'll be a junior). I'm not sure if all of it's too easy, and I already have a third of it ready. anyways:

Bach- Prelude and Fugue in Bb minor WTC I

Mozart- Sonata in c minor k457

Chopin- Scherzo in Bb minor
            Etude op. 10 no.12 "Revolutionary"

Rachmaninoff- Polichinelle

Prokofiev- Sonata no. 2

Scriabin- Etude in b minor op.8 no. 3

That's my basic 45 minute audition, any suggestions?

If I were you I would seriously consider adding a Beethoven Sonata to your repertoire. Here are my suggestions for the Sonata.

-Sonata No. 23 (Appassionata) 1st and 3rd movements
-Moonlight Sonata (3rd movement)
-Tempest Sonata
-Hammerklavier Sonata- all movements-this is the one i played at the YAG

DONT PLAY THE PATHETIQUE IT"S OVERPLAYED THERE

You might also want to try a Bach Toccata instead of the Prelude and Fugue

I played the one in D minor, but the one in D major is also a great piece that demonstrates your technique.

Prelude and Fugues are also okay, but i think that a toccata is a much more virtuostic piece.  ;) ;) ;)

yeah, thanks for the advice Lisztman, but are they really looking just for virtuostic, difficult pieces. I mean, I saw an easier Haydn sonata on last years YAG recital. Is the hardest repetiore really that necessary? I don't know, but you'd probably know

THE most important thing is not the difficulty of the piece but it needs to be at least sufficient of the CERTIFICATE OF MERIT AT ADVANCED LEVEL

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE PIECE because it shows how much you really understand the piece> ALSO ADD IN ALL DYNAMICS AND SHOW AT LEAST SOME BODY LANGUAGE

I WILL ANSWER MORE QUESTIONS IF YOU WANT

Yeah, that's what all of the other superiors are saying, it's all about interpretation and understanding. Anyways, I made it to Panel Recital last year, so maybe YAG isn't as imposibble as I thought. Say, do you have any idea how many tried out?

Sorry, maninopin, I have absolutely no idea if they do. But from what I hear, California is the only state with enough students for a YAG. who knows? you might
