G/C ?

Are you sure it was not C/G?

C/G is standard chord notation for playing the C chord with G in the bass, in other words, the second inversion. (i.e G - C - E, instead of C- E-G)

G/C  would mean the G chord (GBD) with C in the bass - but as you can see, C is not part of the G chord - does not mean that you cannot do it, just unusual.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Hi Bernhard,

you explained it already: The slash means that the note following it is in the bass.
This way even "weirder" chords are possible like E/C or B/C. In jazz, especially the more modern styles, they are not unusual - they are part of the education of every jazz pianist.

G/C could be part of a very common pop chord progression over a C pedal point (Example: Intro of "Your Song" by Elton John):

C - F/C - G/C - F/C - repeat those 4 chords ad nauseam...

Best Wishes,
Monk
