Am I practicing efficiently?
on: May 06, 2011, 05:47:08 PM
Hello everyone, I've been playing piano for about 2 1/2 months now and am practicing with Alfred's Adult Piano Course Book 2. I usually practice for an hour or so on a piece until I can play it, but I don't try to master pieces unless I really like it. I feel like sticking to one piece for too long staggers my progress because I eventually get bored and no longer wish to practice the piece for the day.

Would it be better to focus on one piece until I get it down or is it more efficient to practice several different pieces?

It's not what you play it's how you play.

And he asked just about that! Either play many pieces, or play a few pieces well.

I think you should find some a bit more difficult piece that you like (not super difficult, but so you learn some technique and develop your musicality) whlie you learn many easier pieces to build your repertoire.

'Getting it down' is not necessarily playing well.   It's not about correct notes it's about correct execution.

Hi there "nocturne,"

Would you mind posting a video for us of you practicing?  10-20 minutes of live footage would be the easiest way to tell what parts of your practicing are optimal, and which could be made a little more efficient.

Looking forward,
Mike
