How do you read these piano chords?
on: May 07, 2011, 03:31:18 AM
I want to learn how to play a song but I don't know how to read what it means. Here's what it has.

Verse: Eb Bb Ab . Eb Bb/D Cm Ab x4
Bridge: Fm Eb/G Ab Bb x3 Ab Eb/G Bb x2
Chorus: Eb Gm Cm Ab Eb Bbsus4/D Cm Ab
Eb Gm Cm Ab Eb Bbsus4 Cm Ab
Eb (link: Bb Abadd9 . Eb Bb/D Cm Ab)

I looked up each chord but they have so many different ones like major, major 7th, minor, and minor 7th. Idk which one it is. Can you please tell me the notes for each chord please?

The notes? I can try.
Eb is Eb, G, and Bb.
Ab is Ab, C, Eb
C minor is C, Eb, G
F minor is F, Ab, C
Bb is Bb, D, F
G minor is G, Bb, D

I was confused by the Bbsus4 because I don't know a lot, but I hope this helped!

Bbsus4 means that the the 3rd is replaced by the 4th. So instead of Bb D F, which is the Bb triad, you would play Bb Eb F.

Bb/D would be a Bb major chord, but starting on D. D F Bb

Whoa didn't notice the poll... I learned it in harmony class, I think?

Which reminds me, I have so much more harmony left to learn. RCM and their money making schemes  ::) :P

Chord symbols tell us what the harmony is, but it doesn't tell us how to play it.  This is very different from playing a full piano arrangement off sheet music.  I guess what I'm saying is you don't have to play the chord notes in a certain order, or all in a closed position with the left hand, or hold them all in a chord.  There are many possible ways to present that harmony.

No way, I only did Harmony 3. :)
I think they probably changed the curriculum though. They change it all the time.

@nystul, I didn't realize the OP wanted the actual notes to the music. I assumed he/she had the sheet music and just wanted to understand what the chord symbols meant? :-/

I guess the meaning of my point is unclear, and it is probably a worthless point to make given the experience level of the OP.  I was just saying, a chord symbol Eb means you have Eb major chord.  But that doesn't mean you need to play with left hand, Eb-G-Bb each a third above the other.  If you play all chords like that the harmony will be right but your playing will be very bland.  OK for a sing along with popular melodies but not much else.  But in the first place you have to know what the chord notes are before you can do anything fancy with them, so nevermind!

Ok I see what you mean now :)
Yeah I just wanted to give pabiox the notes of the chord, I shouldn't have used the word triad, it was more as an example. Thanks for clarifying!
