Anyone seen this movie???
on: August 16, 2004, 06:12:07 AM
Just wondering if anyone has seen the movie "The Piano Teacher"? It is a french film and uses subtitles. It is out on VHS and DVD. Very, very strange film. Haven't made up my mind about it yet. Not at all what I was expecting. Anyone else?

I just saw it recently. I couldn't take it and stopped it just before the end after the teacher stabbed herself and ran out of the music building. It seems it's about the misguided phantasies of some screwed up person. Music is only used as a vehicle. Very strange indeed.

Oh man, it's awful!!  Watch out for those foreign films!  I checked it out from the library because I thought that it would be educational, right?  Well.....I was in for a shock!  Everything was going along just fine and dandy, then all of a sudden, with no warning whatsoever, she pulls up her dress!  I guess that this woman is into self-mutilating behavior--but I totally lost it when........(if you've seen the movie, you know what I mean).  I had to stop it at that point, I was queasy.  Shagdac, I'm surprised that you haven't heard us talk about it at chat, we talk about it nearly every week.  The movie is good from a musical standpoint, but this isnt for kids!

Yeah, don’t listen to the sissies. It is a good movie.  ;)

There seems to be a tradition of depicting piano teachers as insane in movies >:(. Here are a few more besides The piano teacher:

The seventh veil – A concert pianist played by Ann Todd tries to commit suicide, she then goes on therapy with Herbert Lom, who uncovers that her problems can all be traced back to her sadistic piano teacher (James Mason), who amongst other things beat her fingers with a stick when she made  mistakes.

The 5000 fingers of Dr. T – Piano teacher Dr. T, runs a piano school whose main aim is to make 500 boys practise the piano 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Madame Sousatska – Shirley Maclaine as a frustrated piano concertist who insists on Hanon for her charges.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

I liked it, and I would recommend it. It is definately bizarre though........but that is what makes it a good film.

I just saw this movie, the seventh veil, and I loved it  :-[.    And, he only beat her hands once when he lost his temper because she wanted to leave, then she got them burned in a car crash.  She became fixated on this and even though her hands actually healed, mentally she had decided that becuase of those injuries, she would never be able to play again, which is why she tried to commit suicide.  There were some interesting and convincing subtleties in the movie, which I love.

Just had to add my two cents :)
