Help on Scriabin Etude Op. 8 No. 12
on: May 14, 2011, 12:51:59 AM
Can anyone give me any tips on learning Scriabin's Etude Op. 8 No. 12? This piece is killing me! And how long does something of this calibur take to learn on average?

Ive recorded this piece a number of times...All I can say is, learn it slow. I made the mistake of trying to get through it fast and I regret it now. My left hand misses a lot of notes and my right hand octaves are jumbled up...See for yourself
What I can tell you to do is...
Count by the left hand- They play in triplet 8th notes
The runs in the right hand (Look in my video for reference) like 0:6, 0:12, 0:18, 1:06 (places like that, there's to many to name) do not go together with the left hand. Its all poly-rhythm, so learn that very carefully.
Pay attention to dynamics, its not all FF, listen to Horowitz interpretation in Moscow, its better than the Carnegie hall edition. He starts out playing PP, (I even try to copy that in my video) and also listen to his 1962 studio version. Sing the middle section, it has such a lush romantic melody.
Some notes you can take with the right hand that the left hand is supposed to have...
The section starting at (2:05) the climax so to say...make sure to not bounce the left hand..They have huge jumps and pianists tend to jump their hand around, making them hit other notes.
Listen to this version, its his second version of his etude.
I would learn it, but I already learned the first one,and its hard to relearn a whole piece to play it differently.
Good luck in learning it. make it a good progress in working..it pays off.

That really wasn't a bad performance at all. Why did you think it was too fast? It's actually a bit slower then I'm used to hearing. I, too, am finally learning this piece. I studied it years ago - but never really got it up to concert level. I don't find it all that hard, really. Even the jumps. I like Horowitz's Moscow performance up to the fanale. Then he just seems to really bang out the notes and it's impossible to listen to. At any rate, I liked the way you played it!
