I hope there will come better times, where making music is not anymore treated like a crime, where music isn't anymore treated like either opium for the masses (pop) or an elitist hobby of rich people (classical). And, especially, where music isn't treated any longer from a mainly or only capitalist view. Yes I admit I was exaggerating with my "one hour on a real piano" but nevertheless, I can at least say that I had the luck of having grown up with the real sound of real instruments, so I can better deal with the restraints of digital ones. I am afraid that the new generations will lose all real contact to real music. Already now it's really hard to convince some people of the value of a real piano. They rather spend thousands of $ on the most fancy cars/TV's, game stations/iPhones etc... or on jetting around and living in luxury hotels for weeks, during every school vacation.

it's all about taste.

I think you should play louder, they have no agrument for your allready reasonable playing time and the hours you play between. Also it seems that whenever you play they are at home? Do they even have a job or something? I find it really sad that if one cannot enjoy his hobby after a long day of work or on a day off without worriying about low life neighbours that have nothing better to do then to whine about everything other people do.

The way I see it is that it could even affect you playing if you subconcious will make you play softer / more shallow. Also ... they should have known when moving in to an appartement.

Good luck with your practice and enjoy it, life is to short to care about whiners.

Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow! that is very NOT COOL!  By the way i'd much rather hear the relaxing tones of a piano than a baby screaming their lungs out :) idk what is wrong with them...Does i happen to be a studio apt? i had that problem way back...

It's so ironical that we can complain about the noise of our neighbours while we can't hear the noise we can make which can be more louder and annoying.  I am saying this because of your tone-deaf neighbour's behaviour.  If your aim is not to move, then try to tell them in a suitable way about the noise they made and you had tolerated, and tell them definitely that if they want you to move, then at least they must help you from the transporting of the piano to a place where you can live.

I am not a coward, but try not to get in a very serious confrontation because the only thing one gets is being more annoyed, frustrated and angrier than before without resolving anything.

Could you be more specific with your piano's size, type (vertical or grand), and location?, this comes because one wants to know the difficulties of moving your piano.  In fact, I suppose that because is a piano, you will need help to transport it.

If all of you come to a deal, then instead of being rude and aggressive and complaining of the "noise" you made and evict you, at least they must suggest some options and help you with finding and moving the piano to a more suitable place, either in the building or at another place.

Just get a DP with headphone capability and avoid all the confusion. For those of you that don't think a DP can resemble the sound of an acoustic, try a Yamaha P95 or a DGX640...

How did your situation turn out?  I'm facing much the same now.  Maybe you can help?

In my case, the owner (we'll call him J) initially (verbally) agreed that it was okay for me to play and instruct piano before I entered my lease.  I made a fine point of this.  Too bad I did not get this in writing!  Dumb-me.  Anyway, when my new neighbor complained to the other owner (we'll call him H--there are two) about my playing, J still again verbally agreed to honor his initial agreement (during hours stipulated on my lease).  Part of the problem now is that there are two owners and both see differently but they have to put up a united front.  So, now, they are changing their tune to appease the griping neighbor.  Who gripes about everything.  I live in an 8-plex where everyone else loves my playing and everyone cannot stand her--she's intrusive and demanding to say the least.  There was peace here before she came along.  But management seems pretty indifferent at this point because I believe they are looking for the easiest way out.  She just signed a new lease.  My lease ends unfortunately at the end of this month.

I should mention also that before my new neighbor moved in, SHE knew what I did for a living AND that she was already complaining about the noise of footsteps on the hardwood floor!  I told her to deal with management then.  She repeatedly ignored me for a while--to the point of harassment several times, even when I was not playing.  Now that she is dealing with them, they want to ignore the fact that their removal of the carpeting in her unit may be creating this new problem that didn't exist before.  And, as you can imagine, she's already put them to a lot of other expense based on her demanding nature so they probably just can't stomach one more expense!

I don't think he wants to replace his Steinway D for a DP......
