Great piano teachers abroad or in London
on: May 30, 2011, 07:56:42 PM
Are there any great piano teachers abroad who people go to? I have thought of going to Wolfgang Manz, as I think he's a great pianist. I'm not getting very far in the UK because I keep getting mixed messages when I mention 'international standard', because of my age (I'm not under 25 put it that way!). I'm also in the North of England, which doesn't help because most of the ambition is in London. I've even thought of emailing Van Cliburn! I don't know, I have just had enough of people telling me in a subliminal way 'you will never make it. Do something else'. I have caught the piano 'bug', which means I'm possessed with the idea of being on Carnegie Hall. It's a great feeling when you get it, but not so great when everyone brings you down.

wait, haven't you recently been accepted to a music academy, which costed a rather great deal of money? I know you want to be an international pianist, but trying to rush it wont help. Do your diploma at the school you're at.

Anyway, there are like a billion teacher people "go to". Look at summer academies, competition juries, teachers to young pianists you like...

Often your advancement is not dependent upon your teacher. You also have two ears.

I like teachers and coaches as far as they go but in the end it's you, you, you! I know it's difficult to listen critically to your own playing while you are doing it. That's why we use recorders. After a while you will be able to hear what they hear.

Something fell through, so now I am struggling to finance the whole thing. I am not trying to rush anything, I just think that if I could find an eminent teacher and convince him/her how serious I am, they would take me on. I actually looked at Hereford summer school, but it's £450, so maybe next year!

I'm sorry to hear that... Maybe you could sell yourself a bit? Playing cheesy pieces at graduations, funerals and weddings?

Anyhow, I'm going to start studying in the Netherlands. It's not that expensive. Also, Germany is cheap.

Really? Including room board and tuition? How does that work out? Do you get discounts because of some special status or ??

Well, ofc it's not free. Where I will study the fee is around 1700€, which is way cheaper than some other schools. Also, I've found some rooms which costs less than 200€ a month. So it's not free, but, as I said, cheaper than many other schools.

Would that be for the whole school year? If it is, it is a reasonable price.

I can recommend Graham Fitch, with whom I had a consultation lesson recently .  He used to teach in Purcell School and a university in Cape Town.

He is based in South West London and teaches on a Bechstein grand piano.

I also recommend his weekly a blog on practising the piano:  https://practisingthepiano.com
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

There are some of the greatest of teachers in the UK.  Look for pupils of Mathay - they may be quite old now but perfectly servicable!

Yes, it happened to my computer too.  I think think there is a problem with Internet Explorer or an old version of it.  I had to open it using another browser, Google Chrome.

The Hereford Summer School is fantastic. It has now moved to Walsall in the Midlands so that may be a bit nearer to you? The teachers are all really excellent. Graham Fitch (as mentioned above) tutors here - he is amazing ands definitely one of the most sought-after tutors.
