Johann Nepomuk Hummel

Hi! Have you heard about this not-very-well-known composer? Have you ever played any of his pieces? Or maybe you just heard some recordings of his pieces?
I ask, becouse I've read, that Chopin appreciated the educational value of his pieces, and now J.N. Hummel is a bit forgotten composer.  It's also very hard to find any sheets or even performances.   ???  :'(

There's stuff at IMSLP.  He was the greatest pianist of his age and wrote a highly influential piano tutor.

Hi,

Johann Nepomuk Hummel is in my opinion a very underrated composer. Especially his brilliant piano concertos have got far too little attention.

In fact, Hummel is one of my favourite piano concerto composers and I would almost go as far as put him on par with Beethoven (I said almost).

Some of his piano solo music (like the sonatas) can be a little bit boring however...

His trumpet concerto is famous.
And the chopinesque piano concertos are incredible, no. 2 (Am) and no. 3 (Bm) in particular.
Here are nice recordings:
-
&feature=related (Concerto no. 2 in Am, 1st mvt)
-
&feature=related (Concerto no. 3 in Bm, 3rd mvt)

I think it is very strange that these to piano concertos (no. 2 and no. 3) aren't more known among classical musicians! It's a shame...  :)

I read through some of his works, from the Dover edition. Dover has a collection of his piano works. Some are quite interesting and showy, like the Sonata in F-sharp minor. The 2nd movements of his sonatas definitely point toward the long lyrical melodic style of Chopin.
I would love to have some of his music played more often!  :D

Probably Hummel was at the top of Chopin's favourites list.
