What if I jump this part?
on: June 07, 2011, 02:49:22 AM
I really want to learn Schubert's Impromptu Op. 90 n.2 in Eb, but the "middle" part, where it modulates to another tonality, I don't like it...and the ending is very similar to it...

Can I just jump this part...or can I add and exerpt of another piece to it?

With "can" I mean what would sound good in there?

I don't understand what you mean.  You want to change the music? What exactly are you having trouble with?

By the way, he brilliantly modulates from E flat major to b minor. What's not to like?! :(

If you are borrowing ideas from the piece and trying to do something creative, say like improvising in a particular style, it could be a good idea.

However, if you are modifying the piece - and it is a rather significant modification you speak of - because you "don't like it," you are probably just cheating yourself.  It would be wiser to search for another piece you like better.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

It's fine to omit parts of a piece.  It's Schubert, after all.  Even Schubert omitted Schubert. ;)

Thank you all!

I think I will improvise over the harmony.

Hi Countrymath,

I'd consider giving the B minor section of that piece a chance. It looks completely different from the Eb section, but it can be interesting. Both sections have the same rhythmic motif, an accent on the second beat of many measures. So the challenge is to bring this rhythmic motif out without being unbearably obvious about it. If you do it right, you can get a feeling of unity between the two different sections even though they are in widely different keys and seem to be of completely different character. So I'd say, don't rule it out yet, it might be more fun than you think.
