Need a piece to improve left hand
on: August 22, 2004, 02:43:59 PM
I have a very small list,  but I'm not sure how effective they are :

Godowsky-Chopin Etude for LH op.10 no.3 (probably too difficult)
(and no.4 but probably no.4 is way way way too hard for me)
Chopin Op.10 No.12 (famous)
THe godowsky version
(looked at the score and collapsed)
Any more suggestions also?

Before doing Godowsky, why dont you do the original first?
the revolutionary etude you mentioned would be a good start.

I was thinking off that,  but I thought,  the harder it is,  in the end,  your technique may perhaps increase more,  or am I mistaken?

Yep, you're mistaken. Unless your aim is to keep the repetitive strees injury specialists in business, you're not going to accomplish much.
What pieces have you played that work your lh? What about your lh do you want to improve? What motions are you doing wrong that need to be corrected?

yeah, definitely don't do the Godowsky until your left hand is already very strong.

Scriabin wrote some nice preludes for the left hand, you could look into those.

Hmoll is right about asking what, specifically, you want to develop.  We could better suggest pieces if we knew what you wanted.

Speaking of Scriabin, take a look at his Etude Op.8 No.12. It is a great piece to develop the left hand and it is a great piece to listen to.

Scriabin in general wrote alot of music with very difficult left hand sections.  Not only op. 8 #12, but many of his etudes offer left hand challenges (some almost as difficult as Godowsky, IMO).

Well,  I was practicing scles and arpeggios,  and it was hard to notice that the left hand was twice as slow as the right hand,  aprt from octaves
