New Work by Michael Maxwell Steer - Video
on: June 11, 2011, 06:10:17 PM
I got involved in this pretty much literally by accident (after the pianist originally booked to play Piano 1 was ruled out by injury) and just loved this piece to bits. There are two more movements, both considerably shorter than this one.
There are some notes about the piece on the actual YouTube page, if you're interested.
(I'm the bald one playing the black Yamaha!)

I very much like the composition as well as the interpretation! And it's really great to see you in action! So according to the background information you learnt that basically in 10 days!! Just WOW!!!

well, I will preface my remarks by saying that in general contemporary classical music is not to my taste.
however, I must say that this is very well done. having the score in the video is helpful for me at least. It's a strangely haunting piece, and I must say that as a whole I enjoyed it.
anyway, thanks for sharing this, and richard, i'm impressed that you could learn this in only a week's time. I could never learn a piece that quickly, even an easy one.

Thanks for the kind comments, people. The composer has just uploaded the second and third movements, completing the piece:
Movement 2
Movement 3

Hi Richard,
Bravo!!! Wonderful musicianship and artistry by both you and Mr. Steer!
First I confess that I'm not much of a modernist. As you know, my niche is the late romantic period and in the chronology of the piano literature, my upper limit is about 1940.
Having said that though, I'm open-minded, so decided to listen to this work (all three movements). Almost immediately into the first movement, I was hooked! This is one of the finest, most captivating and exciting duo-piano works I've ever encountered, and the performance by both you and Mr. Steer is superb despite the complexities and difficulties. My compliments to Mr. Steer for composing this extraordinary piece. I hope that everyone here at Piano Street will pause to listen. It's well worth it!
