How to know if your a good singer?
on: August 22, 2004, 04:31:53 PM
I enjoy singing..... And in my head, when i sing, i feel i have a beaitfull voice......... But everyone knows that what you hear in your head is diffrent then what other people hear..... Ive only sung seriously infront of one person, and thats my mother..... Ofcourse she said i was good... But you truly cant trust your parents with honest anwsers...... I thought "well maybe if i sing over a mic, i can hear how i truly sound" so I went to a studio and belted out and i sounded the same into the mic, as i do in my head......  Yet my guitarist said it wasnt that good........

Does anyone get where im going here? I dont wanna go around saying "oh i have a great voice" becouse i might not have a good voice.... (like if i record it over a computer speaker, my voice is not good... But when i sing on a proffesional mic, my voice is.... This is also a reason i cant just sing over a comp mic and send it)  Can anyone help me out on what i should do? How can i truly experiment and see if the voice im hearing in my head is the voice that the people around me are hearing......

I Can sing 2 stlyes, the husky james hetfield (metallica) style growling voice

And a much higher robert plant meets freddy mercury voice.....

Both sound good to me... but im not sure if they do to others

Difficult...

Perhaps you overrate yourself...

People who overrate themselves are difficult to teach and difficult to give advice.

I can only say one thing for sure: A good voice sounds good with or without microphone. If you seem to only sound good with certain equipment, then your voice is not good.

Get a teacher.

Best Wishes,
Monk

You shouldnt be worrying about style.  The important thing is being able to hit the notes on key.  Then being able to sing as loud as possible, without having any affectations.  If youre saying you sing with that husky metallica voice, then I'd bet you probably can't sing.  You should just try to sing in your natural voice and not try to impersonate someone.

Post a wav here and we will tell you the hard truth.  :)

hehe... Simon Cowell will REALLY let you know!  If he loves you you are on your way, if he hates you and says something to make you cry, you will probably be turned off of singing forever!!

by te way, has anyone on this forum every tryed out for Canadian or American, or World, or etc. Idol?

well monk... see its odd.. Like when im just belting out normally in my room..... I can hit all the notes very easily.... When i sing over a mic, my voice is the same (I still can sing  and hit notes easily) But im just not sure if what im hearing sounds like what the other people are listioning..... (kinda like american idol, i dont wanna think im a god like singer, Belt out infront of hundreds of people.... and suck)

Maybe i will do a wav... i would like to get a better mic first....

haha yeah i was gonna say listen to all the people on idol who think they're the best singer on the planet- there was this one girl in aussie idol who was (seriously thinking this) that she was the most amazing singer on the planet and was like yeah they're gonna put me in the top 12 without having to audition further and she SUCKED and when they told her that she was like 'are you serious' like she was completely stunned at the fact that they told her she couldn't sing for sh*t!

so basically if you think you can sing chances are you probably can't (no offence) and if you still think you're great get some decent people to tell you their opinions and if they don't think you're amazing then you probably aren't. and get some singing lessons cos they always help!

and that's my tips on singing- if you want to be able to sing get some lessons please cos i don't take any singer seriously unless they have, singing in the shower is not good enough!- and this is coming from a person who SUCKS at singing unless you can't hear me!

I hate lessons..... Lessons just dont work for me..... I took 1 guitar lesson..... was bored out of my mind..... knew all the crap he said, walked out...... And without any lessons im a really good guitarist (still better then alot of my friends that take lessons)

Never took lessons on piano, Learned how to read sheet music in a day or 2.... Now im pretty decent (though not that great.... I havent bin playing long)

And i dont know, I mean like i said dude, what i hear over a mic (which has to be the voice other people hear) was still pretty Good, The only reason my guitarist said that it wasnt for the band is simply becouse the thought of someone else taking his spotlight pisses him off (he feels he is the boss no matter what)... I dont know.... I enjoy it, I will belt out in a car while listioning to queen and no one says "dude your voice is annoying" Or even squints a bit at my crappy voice.. So i suppose its not that bad...... I will try my best to get a recording for you guys to listion to....

Do you know what kind of person it takes to say something like "dude your voice is annoying" to you in traffic?  Sure, it's possible they dont mind your voice, but it is even more possible they are too scared to say anything.

You obviously need to find a teacher who can teach you something. Because of that one lesson, you can't draw the conclusion that all lessons are useless.

Imagine how good you could really be if you had a good teacher.

A cheap and easy way to find out, or at least get some idea, is to go to a Karaoke Bar and sing your favorite songs.

Then you wasted your money by not telling the teacher he was going over things you already knew.  If you had told him, I know that already, what I really need help in is THIS, then you may have been benefited.

Teachers are exceptional people, but most of them aren't mind readers.

Why don't you think he is good?  How many lessons have you had with him?  What's the basis of your judgment?  How do you know if you judged correctly?  You can't even work out if you're a good singer or not.

Sounds like you fit this bill Mr Rebel (username kind of says it all too).  "Bored out of my brain," 'crap"  "hate lessons".

So I guess, it doen'st really matter what anyone else says, you're a great singer!  And if you're happy with that, then that's all that matters.

Sorry, MrRebel, but after your comments about lessons it not only seems that you overrate yourself in respect of singing, but you seem also be a know-it-all.

"MrRebel" as a nickname as well doesn't reflect an appropriate humbleness towards music, as it would suit a beginner in music...

I have a very good saying for you:

"The trouble with people who do not know is that they do not know what they do not know."

You should seriously ponder whether this saying applies to you. And when you quickly come to the conclusion "No!", then you should even more seriously ponder whether you perhaps are one of those people...

Best Wishes,
Monk

If you don't want to audition for American/Canadian Idol and feel the wrath of judges, you could try singing for a friend or acquaintance. Request that they give a completely blunt, honest, and truthful critique.

If the idea of being a good singer is more in a technical sense, try singing "Happy Birthday" to someone who is proficient with music and isn't tone-deaf. Music teachers and choir auditioners usually fit this description. Of course, if they bore you terribly, this might not be the best option.

Or..why not post a .wav as soon as you get a better microphone?

Support bacteria. They're the only type of culture some people have.
