Chopin - "raindrop"
on: June 26, 2011, 10:58:27 PM
In Chopin prelude op.28 no 15 (Raindrop), sheet music from pianostreet puts 1 - 2 over the A at the first bar and, at the second bar 5 - 3 over the C. Also, at 3º bar, 5 -4 over F and G.
It seems it is intended to play the chords (EGC - DFE - CGE, etc, with the right hand. However, there`s a musical phrase made by the upper notes and the inferior notes of these chords are "linked" to the notes played by the left hand.
I saw Valentina Igoshima playing this prelude and it seems to me that she plays the melody with RH and all the other notes with LH. And tjis seems to me more logical.
So, I`m confused and ask for your help. How to play correctly these bars?
Thanks.

The fingering in the Piano Street Urtext is Chopin's own, which is sometimes quite unconventional.
However, in this case for example the 5-1 on the first beat of bar 2 does not necessarily mean that the G-flat and E-flat in bar should be played with right hand. The slurred fingering (5-1) means that the C should first be played with 5 and then silently switch to 1 in order to prepare the hand for continuing the legato line.

Chopin often used this kind of fingering where a singing melody and the individual qualities of the fingers are of high priority, rather than what may seem like the most practical solution at first glance.

Thank you very much. I didnt know that. Usually I never play musics played by almost everybody. But after I saw Valentina Igoshina playing this prelude I "fall in love". Chopin + Valentina = pure beauty. Have a look in youtube.
Best wishes
