Graduate Audition Repertoire
on: July 05, 2011, 12:57:21 AM
I'm worrying about my audition repertoire. I know it's substandard for performance, but I'm more looking into piano pedagogy. I'm thinking of applying at University of Oklahoma, Westminster Choir College, Northwestern University, and several others, but those are the biggies. Here's what I plan to play:
Bach Prelude and Fugue in F# Major, Book I
Beethoven Sonata Op. 90
Chopin Scherzo in Bb minor
Ginastera Suite de Danzas Criollas
If the Scherzo is not up to par by September (though I'm feeling very positive about it), I was going to substitute the Brahms Two Rhapsodies, Op. 79. I was also thinking of switching the Ginastera for Ravel's Valses Nobles et Sentimentales. I love the Ravel much more, but it might not be modern enough.
My friend got into OU (my top choice) with:
Bach Prelude and Fugue in G Major, Book II
Mozart Sonata K. 576
Brahms Capriccio from Op. 116
Kabalevsky Sonata in F, Mvmt I
Is my repertoire roughly equivalent?
Thanks.

I would like to clarify regarding your graduate audition program. I am assuming it is for a masters (not doctorate) degree program. (You will need longer program for doctorate audition). Your program is not substandard by any means. I think you are worrying unnecessarily.
I actually like the program as it stands now. The audition committee will probably only hear one of the Rhapsodies only. Ravel is great, but can be lengthy. Your repertoire is definitely equivalent and perhaps even "stronger" than your friend's; assuming both of you play equally well.
So, please do not worry! But do check the requirements from each university very carefully. They may differ ever so slightly. For example, some schools may require an virtousic etude.
Good luck!
