damper pedal advice needed
on: July 07, 2011, 11:44:45 PM
I've been using the damper pedal for less than a year, and I still have issues on how far up to lift it. It feels like the notes are being cut off wy too shortly when I lift it. I'm going to be performing this song:
in front of an audience in a few weeks. I have it all memorized, the only thing I'm not completely comfortable with is the pedal.
-where words fail, music speaks.

legato pedal goes like this: Play a scale with ONE finger. Count 1---2----. Play C on 1 , press pedal on 2. Do NOT lift pedal until you press D. When you press D lift the pedal simultaneously (count 1) and replace the pedal on 2. Practice this all the way up the scale. When you are playing your piece , release the pedal together with the first note of the new chord and press the pedal immediately after that. Bit hard to explain without demonstrating but if you get it right there should be no shortening of notes. Good Luck

Hi,

Releasing pedal:
Lift pedal just at the same moment when you play the note or chord that would get unclear.

Pressing damper pedal:
Why are the notes cut or too short? You have to press damper before you release the keys that you want to sound longer.

In this piece bass notes have great importance. If you lose bass notes the sound field might get empty.

Often pedalling looks like quick up-down movements that are guided by ear.

Hope it helped.
