Where the magic happens!
on: July 09, 2011, 02:47:55 AM
Post a picture of your piano "workstation"

Don't clean it up! We want mess and all.

The bench in the picture was found by my mother at a thrift store. It's french- 1920's! Interesting.

haha ... well, I'd hate to part with mine, but the minute I saw yours I wanted to trade  ;D.  So, I guess it depends on why I'd be parting  :).  Don't worry, my piano's in the other room and couldn't read this...

PS - yours looks like s/he's wearing roller skates!  :D

Yeah, mine was a long time coming, and it is a huge blessing in my life.  Mine is 7'6" :).  My first Steinway is *still* a long time coming, I guess :).

7'6 is a good size! What type of piano is it? I dont see a symbol in the picture

Edit: I see it! Yamaha.

I'm very lucky to have what I have, but there's nothing like a real acoustic grand!

It's a Yamaha.  You can actually see/read it in the photo, but it's not exactly blaring.  I looked for years and found a few that were OK (though finding the right piano and finding the right time to buy were not *exactly* the same problem at the same time!), always I tested the bass first, and was looking for a certain sound and when I played this one, I couldn't believe I had finally found the sound I was looking for.  It's pretty growling, which is what I had wanted, and aside from it having its unique characteristics with that, it's also because of its length.

I like a really rich bass too. I love playing all the pianos that I can find to hone in on my tastes. I found the perfect piano ONCE. It was a brand spankin' new steinway A. It was small, but there was something about it..... it was perfect!

One can dream, right?!

Yeah, if the sky were the limit I'd of course find several perfect ones, I'm sure :).  If I let myself go to a big city and try a bunch of Steinways, Bosies, etc., I'm sure my tastes would change a bit (well, already they change slightly anyway).  But, I'm not sure what to think about "dreaming" anymore.  For now I will just exist.

Mine is a B 211 (cm, I don't know how many feet, probably similar to m1469's C7).m1469, sometimes it might take less time than you think! :) I really thought I'd never ever be able to have one of those, in my whole life! Until 2 and a half years ago :)

Yeah, it looks very similar in size.  I think right now it just all feels completely out of my hands and I am certainly not closed to it, but I certainly can't even fathom it right now, so generally I just try not to think about it.

*pushes it away*

BTW -  Just in case anybody happened to ponder it, mine is actually *incredibly* clean right now, the surface, I mean.  I just got everything off of it for the first time in at least a year, about a month ago.  Things are slowly creeping back on, though.  :-  It was a very unfortunate state of affairs before I cleaned it off!  There are some people in the world who's houses are buried in stuff they can't part with, and they have to literally function by paths throughout their stuff.  The top of my piano somewhat resembled a condensed version of that, though it was out of sheer laziness and lack of space (vs. a psychological need to just hold on to stuff).

I don't - although I would at the same time like to feel able to presume that your exclamation mark is in recognition of the fact that you have a sense of humour and that you can see that, rather than any "argument" being put forward in the post to which you refer here, I'm simply having a friendly joke at Thal's expense with not the remotest harm intended towards him; indeed, this forum would be a far poorer place without him...

I'm not sure if Thal particularly understands that it is all in good humor! It seems that Thal is always inflamed by your comments, making it seem that you two are arguing, not joking.

I may have taken your comment as a joke had Thal not been so angered...

Then you should perhaps make a little more effort to respond in your own way, uninfluenced by the manner in which you might assume that Thal would react or has reacted! Only Thal will know whether or not or to what extent he may have interpreted my remarks as "all in good humo(u)r" - but that is surely first and foremost for him to figure out, not you or me!

Here it is then. I must sew myself some new pedal bags as the present ones have holes. The seat came with the piano in 1971. I have an "artist's bench" but cannot stand the noises it makes. Do your seats not make noises, m1469 and Wolfi ? I became fed up with the creaking and squeaking and glued the leg back on the old one, which had broken, sending me to the floor during a frenzied improvisation some years ago. So far it has held and I relegated the"artist's bench" to my practice clavier.

Mine doesn't usually, that I remember, although I think I've heard it once in a recording.  There's probably something I could oil or so but haven't touched it since I bought it about 6(?) years ago.  I have to admit that I splurged on the bench and got a Jansen, and it's truly a very, very good bench!  It's guaranteed for life and it's upholstery is good leather, so generally I'm way, way happy with it!  It's sort of like a pet or something ... I'm very attached to it (no pun intended).

What kind of wood is your piano?  It's beautiful :).

Mahogany. It used to be a beautiful deep red colour but it has turned brownish after forty years of exposure to sunlight.

Here it is in 1980, nine years after I bought it new. I have faded with exposure to light too.

Here is my piano - a Grotrian 186 - with my dog, who is by the way learning to play and loves music, especially Woofgang Mozart, JS Bark and Poochini.
