on: July 17, 2011, 08:31:32 PM
I want to start writing music but i always get stuck in the beginning, where i'm suppose to right the note value, or what ever its called...
here's the question: whats top and whats bottom, how can i define both? i hope my question was clear enough. if anyone has a website that can help.

time signature
the top number tells you how many beats are in each measure. The bottom tells you which note value gets the beat
For example in 4/ 4 time the time signature tells us there are four quarter notes in each measure.
in 2/2 time there are two beats of something in each measure, the bottom means the half-note gets a beat
in 3/8 time there are three beats in each measure, and the eight-note gets the beat
There are two kinds of time signatures: duple and triple. Duple are signatures divisible by two (2/4, 4/4) and triple are divisible by 3 (3/8, 3/4)
Just type in music theory, time signature in google or yahoo and you will get all the answers you need.
https://www.teoria.com/index.php
is a excellent website which will give you all the theory you need and then some and also gives you tutorials and exercies to help you practice what you learned

Sure, a simple question. Now that you know that in a 4/4 time signature (called simple quadruple) you have 4 beats worth a crotchet or quarter note (depending on where you come from!) you have a simple answer.
But to truly understand what this means, you need to learn an instrument and learn to play some music. The you will perhaps begin to understand what this stuff all means.
