on: August 27, 2004, 09:39:51 AM
Hi All,

I've just fallen very much in love with this piano concerto and i am acquiring as many good recordings as i can for this magnificent piece.

Please let me know which are some of the most precious and important recordings that are out there ya?

it will help me most definitely if you could share in depth your recommendation....

Thanks!!!! ;)

Van Cliburn's recording with Kirill Kondrashin is wonderful. Martha Argerich's with the same conductor is also good;she plays faster but there are quite a lot of slips and errors, but still very good.
Waste of time -- do not read signatures.

Richter... most powerful recording.  Some people don't like him.  He does not seem to be quite popular around...
But his Thaikovsky is intense!

This hybrid SACD - featuring Lugansky, Tetzlaff, Nagano and the Russian National Orchestra - was Editor's Choice in Gramophone magazine, February 2004:

Tchaikovsky Concertos, sound clips & reviews

(Hybrid SACDs can be played on normal CD players as well as SACD players.)

 Horowitz/Szell-1953
 Horowitz/Barbirolli-1940
 Cziffra-1957
 Janis-1960's
 Gilels/Reiner

Richter's is pretty lame, and LL's is well...bad.

Richter = lame

someone had to say that  ::)

You like it, or you don't, not a pianist that would try to please...

Still, Richter has the most powerful version!
But for those that are looking for something else...

the previous poster did make some good suggestions!

I don't find it powerful at all...labored, perhaps.

I would recommend Arthur Rubinstein with Erich Leinsdorf and Mikhail Pletnev with Vladimir Fedoseyev.

The live Rubinstein with Barbirolli I think is better.

Absolutely; The 1st in particular is just phenomenal.  I've always thought that Barbirolli was perahps the best orchestral accompanist of the 20th century.
