Days when you don't feel like
on: August 08, 2011, 08:04:38 PM
Why are there days when you don't feel like playing the piano?
What can you do to solve that?

Why would you need to play piano everyday? Nothing wrong with a break everynow and then.

Sometimes I wake up thinking "I can't manage to practice today!". Then it's like my while day is ruined... But after some hours I usually go to the piano and practice even more than the days I'd feel like
It's nothing wrong with taking a day off. It can be good, you shouldn't force yourself to practice.

Days like this happen after I had a really bad lesson, or when I see a kid playing a piece I am (but making it look really easy!). I usually end up turning this into a motivation to work harder, and not rush through things (because these little kids have put in the time too!)

As said you shouldn't force yourself to do so, you should practice because you want to not because you ought to, but to motivate myself to play often all I need to do is listen to music and this kicks my motivation back into gear, even if it's not what I am "Supposed" to be practising playing is playing at the end of the day

There are days where I don't practice, mainly because of depression. However I must admit the main reason of days when I don't practice is because I don't have a piano to practice on (I've never owned a piano, I always went to school to practice. This is not good as I want to study in the Conservatory of Music in Melbourne, but it's far better than nothing).

There isn't one single solution (nor one singel reason either for that matter) to your problem. Sometimes it like, you had a really bad night sleep, and your head hurts, and everything is wrong. Then you wont gain a single thing if you practise like a normal day. Just wait a while, and if you feel better, maybe you could practise something that doesn't take that much time, or isn't very difficult, mentaly and technically.
Some days, you might wake up with the "I really don't want to"-feeling. And that's ok. If you practise, and it doesn't go well, the next day will feel exactly the same. So then you maybe also leave the piano for the day.
Though, some days you might just be lazy and have had the same feeling for a couple of days (maybe because you ended everything with a really sucky last session), then I think it's best if you force yourself into practising. Maybe not like it's your best day, but so that you at least start touching it, and maybe even just 20 minutes at the time...
Everything depends on Why you don't feel like it.

I don't want to practise everyday. I just ofrce my self to do it. ON some rare occasions where the assessments get to me I might take a break for a day or practice less.
