I need a suggestion
on: August 23, 2011, 05:58:16 AM
Hello,

I'm planning to participate in a competition in october. It will be a 20 min. program. The obligatory piece must be from Cimarosa or Scarlatti, and the rest is a free choice.

I selected Scarlatti K. 141 Dm sonata for that.

For the free program I'm planning to play Chopin Ballade 3, a virtuoso etude from A. Saygun (the composer and the etude is not known to many).

Now my question is for the next free piece. What would you suggest (the options are)
Haydn Sonata No 62 (Hob XVI: 52) first movement, or
Haydn Sonata No 62 (Hob XVI: 52) third movement, or
Haydn Sonata No 62 (Hob XVI: 52) second and third movement, or
Brahms Rhapsody No 1 (which I prefer, but is it good to play 2 romantic pieces?)

The other available pieces that I can play (these are not all the pieces I play, but selected considering the time left for the piece). But my first choice is the ones listed above.
Schumann ABEGG variations
Brahms Rhapsody 2
Mozart Sonata KV 330 (any mov)
Beethoven Pathetique and Op 10 no 2 (any movement)
Schubert Sonata D784 in Am (last movement) (because first movement is too long).
Schubert Impromptu Op 142 No 4

Thank you for your help

You need a classical work.

Haydn wrote many sonatas, don't play that one. I'm begging you. If I weren't lying sick in bed, I'd get on my knees and plead. Stay away from anything that is the Pathetique for competitions. I won't complain about the Chopin, because at least you didn't choose the G or F minor.

Does the competition committee for this count Schubert as Classical? The majority of the planet does, but you never know. You don't seem to have strict guidelines, but the wise thing to do is to choose a piece of each era. Either of the Schubert selections would fit better with Scarlatti, Chopin and Saygun.

Best wishes,

If u can MASTER Mozarts k330, it will be great, Schumann's variations imo, also, i suggest u NOT to play Schubert, Schumann would be more convincing, and i agree that u should play somethin' less performed by Chopin, etc ballade 2 or 3

What's wrong with the Haydn?? I think it is a very appropriate choice. Though it is played quite often, it hasn't reached the saturation level of some Beethoven sonatas, like the Pathetique, Appasionata, Waldstein etc.
My vote: Scarlatti (though I love Cimarosa, but you need to do something that you are working on or have worked on), Haydn (1st mov), Schumann, and Saygun. That should take up your 20 minutes.
By the way, have you worked on the Mozart or Haydn before? Stick to the one you have learned.  The playing has to be flawless.
Best of luck!

You could do with something that was composed past 1950 you list looks very old fashioned, and since people who are likely going to be judging, are working within the industry "now" they may like to hear something a bit more contemporary
