Idea!
on: August 25, 2011, 07:56:21 PM
I was thinking of cool ways to elaborate on improvisation: people have been putting in sets of improvs at the same time (so they each possibly have some similar thematic elements). What if [whoever is interested] did a larger-scale set of improvs; for example one in each key, or a set of four for each season, or time of day, color, etc. So there would be a little bit of a predetermined theme before starting the improv, but in the end you'd kind of have a 'set' of pieces.
One thing I was thinking was doing a 30 second improv, then a 1 minute, then a 2 minute, and seeing how they were similar/different (starting/finishing, amount of ideas in each). But I'd do each of them back to back, so I am kind of in the same train of thought doing it.
Anyways, if anyone follows, and wants to think of a 'theme' for a set of improvs (obviously not an hour's worth, but just to see what variety of stuff people can come up with around the same theme). That would be pretty cool!
So: I'd suggest
-seasons
-each tonal center (24 keys is a bit much, but 12 tonal centers ~1 minute each isn't too bad)
-night/day
-colors (black/white/blue/red/green etc)
-forest/snow/water/etc.
If someone else agrees to this, we should get a few people posting (and it would be amazing because everyone has such a different musical background but I'm sure we'd find similarities based on our general life experience with the theme in question).
Sorry for the random rambling post, but it was like a lightbulb-type moment when I was practicing just a few minutes ago.

Quite a few of us improvised, with interesting results, on the same motif a while ago here:

I'll be a starter for anything that's going. It's just a matter of first getting enough people to respond to this thread and then we'll all decide the nature of the set.

this is the bumble boogie bassline and spiderman and some other stuff--my husband and I improvising in the middle of the night. It was 5 years ago--I make no apologies. It's improv! and it was a lot of fun.
bumble boogie bassline is pretty cool to improvise over...but I'm open to anything. I'll try to get this going too!
