What is the Best Keyboard?
on: September 26, 2011, 11:18:16 PM
I have a question. I am going to buy a keyboard but I am not sure exactly which is the best option for me. I would like one with some good synths. I can connect it to the computer to play and record as well. Any suggestions?

Probably the most flexible keyboard I've seen is the Korg Triton, but it's only 5 octaves. If you want a full 88-note span there are plenty to choose from. The Roland V-Piano is supposed to be pretty good, as on would hope for the price being asked.

I have a Yamaha S90-es and a Kurzweil k2600sx.  I greatly prefer the yamaha.  Much better action, great piano sounds, and the dynamic touch is best I've used yet.  Used to have a Roland A-90, but I wore two of them out, and can't get them anymore.  Korg is excellent as well.

Go for one of the Yamaha keyboards. I have a P 85 and I understand they've brought out some new ones. Don't forget you'll need an amp or plan to play through ear phones. It's the way to go in a crowded society. Nobody wants to hear the same phrase over and over until you get it right.

Yes, this is very important.  The best electronic keyboard will not sound very good thru cheap speakers.  Good speakers can get expensive, look perhaps at some self-powered like those on: https://www.musiciansfriend.com/pa-cabinets.  12 inch driver is a minimum, but I'd never get anything but 15 inch.

Headphones are a good option too, and less expensive.  Easy to move around too!

I think no one can answer for you. People say that they "like" this or that. But what does it really mean?

You really should try out some keyboards at a local shop. Judge for yourself the sound, the feel, and the options.

If I didn't require a nice speaker cabinet and so forth, I would have probably got a Roland FP-4f. It's the most inexpensive variety of their "SuperNATURAL" line of pianos. It is basically a keyboard, it is very compact and sits on a stand, but has the SuperNATURAL brain. Same brain as my HP-302. With a nice set of external speakers or headphones, I'm sure it'd be excellent. Might be out of your price range though if you're looking for any old "keyboard."  Privias are pretty good for the price, about half the price of a Roland FP-4f. Noisy action though.

Like I said,I have the Korg Triton workstation.I also own 3 pianos.Keyboards do alot and have their place, but I never played a digital or keyboard that comes close to the sound and feel of the real thing.I know some people havent the room or money for a real one,so keyboards and digitals are great for that reason. Like the bloke said in an earlier post, let your ear be the guide and have an amp worthy of the keyboard its pluged into.Happpy hunting.

It all depends what your needs are. And I'm in agreement that it's up to you finding the one that fits you.
If you're looking for suggestions as you can see they will vary because people will say what they like and you should be the same way. Do a lot of on hands hunting.
But I will tell you my suggestion. I suggest something from the Yamaha line probably because except for an Alesis Micron synth that's all I like and use. I use a Yamaha PSR which might serve your purpose along with a CP5 and a DGX640.
If you're going to play in public good amps are a must. My Micron is thru a cabinet with 4x12 heavy speakers driven by a Behringer K1800 and the PSR is thru a Leslie rotory cabinet. The CP5 and DGX are thru another stack like the Micron. Enough about me..
Just do a lot of shopping around. Suggestions are fine help but in the end, please yourself....

An inexpesive one that you like the touch of is my answer, if using with a computer.  The electronics date quickly, so rely on the computer for most of that.

To answer your question on the best I have to say a Yamaha CP5 hands down.
A bit pricy but you do get what you pay for...

I'm honestly surprised that nobody has suggested Roland.  They make very nice keyboards at a wide variety of price points and i must say I have never been disappointed by mine.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
