Coming back to Piano
on: October 05, 2011, 03:01:10 PM
Hi There,

I've been reading the forum and surely there are a lot a good stuff. Decided to ask your opinion on this matter. A little background first.

I'm a 26 years old guy and I've studied piano from 8 to about 16. Since this was not continuously, I'd say that I had stopped somewhat intermediate level. Played occasionally, worked a lot, entered University and well, not too much time for piano unfortunately.

I majored last year (Computer Science) and decided study piano again. Bought an Yamaha YDP-161 Digital Piano last saturday. As I'm still doing the MBA course, I'll have to study on my own until 2012, April or so. A teacher, because of very short time constraints, is out of question.

Finished Chang chuan's book yesterday and find it amazingly helpful. I remember the time I spent on both Hanon and Czerny (completed half of them both) and how mindlessly they seemed to be.

So far, I took to pieces to learn and practice:

- Odeon (
) and
- Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata mvt. 1 (
)

Although slow, I'm really making some progress. It's understandable, at least 3 years completely away from any piano can really be a bad thing.

Now, that's what I ask you: How do I approach this "comeback"?

Should I be doing scales, starting Bach Inventions or trying the Parallel Sets instructed on Chang's book? Any recommended books, by the way? (I came across this https://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Piano-Technique-Students-Performers/dp/0931340462 and became really interested.

Any thoughts are really appreciated :)

Thank you,
