Yamaha G2 for sale in Georgia, USA
on: October 06, 2011, 09:46:00 AM
Hello, I think I am about to buy a Yamaha G2 to resell from a friend who is moving. The story, the piano was used as art/furniture in a 10,000+ square foot mansion in Georgia. No one in the home plays piano and the piano was only used as docorative furniture, played a few times by a friend of the family on visits. The finish is dark walnut, I will see the piano later on today and find out the serial number and year. I haven't bought it yet and am trying to see if there is any interest in it before I buy. I did talk to a Yamaha dealer and he is chomping at the bit to buy it but I didn't tell him the owners name. Is anyone interested in it and what would be a good selling price if it's as I described.

Its not a bad idea to have 2 parties benefit from a private sale, however, selling a piano on your own is quite difficult because you won't have the traffic of piano shoppers coming to the house. A lot of people show up at the showrooms to browse.
Another thing, unplayed condition doesn't always add up to great condition. The pianos environment has so much to do with its condition. Heat, humidity, dust, temp fluctuations, unmoving parts can eventually stick, natural air pollution. Its still a good idea to have checked out by a good technician.
Lastly, include the pianos age. Depreciation counts.
A really good G2 from the 80's can fetch 5-7K round figure. Give or take. I've seen them in showrooms for around those prices. Askin' aint gettin'. A total rebuild might fetch more and there is a good 25% margin for negotiation.
Dealers will give much less and sell for much more. On consignment, they will take roughly a 25% fee for the sale but can get more for the piano than a private seller. They have techs on standby that can regulate and make adjustments prior to sale not to mention throw a quick French polish on it so it will look real nice.
If its in good shape, I'd ask 4-5K, buyer pays shipping, see how it goes and be done with it. Ask too much and it will stay there.
My opinion. Hope it helps.
