Question
on: October 06, 2011, 12:43:16 PM
Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum so I might as well introduce myself. I'm 20 years old and have been playing piano for about 1 and a half year now. I was looking for some answers to question I had when I stumbled upon this forum, and I thought this would be a good place to ask.

My question is as follows. On a piano sheet, how do know on which octave you should be playing. Is there an octave up or octave down note which can be written on the sheet or something?

Thanks in advance

Hey! Welcome to the forum!
You will play the middle octave unless indicated otherwise. Which will say "8va" and have a line either above or below the notes.

Hi Duoplicity,

The second line in the staff with treble clef marks G key in the middle octave ( this is G4).
The fourth line in the staff with bass cless marks F key and this is one octave down from middle octave.

Octaves are counted as sectors from one C to another C. So that every octave (sector on the keyboard) contains C,D,E,F,G,A and B. Then the next C starts another octave.
