Scarlatti Sonata in F minor K466 L118 - tempo?
on: October 06, 2011, 01:14:19 PM
Hello, I'm working on Scarlatti Sonata in F minor and wondering what should be the correct tempo.

The sheet indicates Andante Moderato but my teacher said it should be faster as she thinks Scarlatti would intend it to be faster.  When I play it faster (even faster than Horowitz version), I find that it loses the tranquility of the piece.

What do you think the tempo of this piece should be?

Help.

I'm pretty certain that Scarlatti would never have written Andante Moderato. I believe it's from the Longo edition- although I'm not 100% certain.

Thank you for your reply.  Yes it's a Longo edition.
The piece was composed for the harpsichord. So now playing on a piano I find it a little tricky to have the right balance of tempo and expression.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
