Goals for beginner
on: October 11, 2011, 03:24:24 PM
Hello everyone, I have been searching this forum for a few days and have decided to post for some opinions.

I am a beginner adult piano player and have taken two 30 minute lessons (one per week).  I have a teacher and we are using Michael Aaron's course (blue book).  I played the clarinet for two years in elementary school (15+ years ago), so I already know how to read most notes on the treble clef.  I'm able to practice 30 minutes to an hour 5-7 days a week.

I like to get as many opinions as possible and am wondering what you think are some realistic goals for a beginner piano player?  Where should I aim to be in 6 months? A year?  At what point can one expect to be ready to learn the easier classical pieces and/or pieces like "The Entertainer."  I know this varies based on talent and hard work, but there must be some sort of average?

Also, if anyone has any feedback about the Michael Aaron books, I'd appreciate it.  Thanks in advance!

Have fun. And I mean that literally. For the first year. Have fun. Enjoy your progress. Luxuriate in it. Listen, Listen hard to what you are doing. Listen to your teacher. Stay relaxed. Remain in control.  Enjoy the experience. Record something. Share it with us. When you are ready play some Bach. Don't neglect your left hand. Listen to others play. Play what you learn for others. Invite there opinion, Both good and bad. Be receptive to what they say. Embrace what makes sense, ignore what doesn't.  Hope that Helps.
